To Impeach or To not Impeach?
That is the question
By: Stacy King-Chaney/Gospel Editor
Shakesphere could not have asked the question better. To impeach or not to impeach is the question posed for the Legislature of the United States of America. To uphold or not to uphold the Constitution of America for the sake of the Republic is at the heart of the matter. Although, we could have an ongoing play on words, this is not for our entertainment. Although we televise the hearings, and it seems like we are pandering to an audience that is more interested in “Reality Tv” rather than reality, it is a somber day for our country. The elected officials that are entrusted with the awesome responsibility to govern the country according to the Constitution and the Laws set forth to uphold and secure our freedoms making the United to States of America the greatest Republic in the world are charged with a great challenge. They are charged to make a decision to impeach or not to impeach.
As flawed as we may be as a nation, we have always prided ourselves on upholding and supporting the Constitution of America. Although it was written by flawed men of an infant nation, the intention of the Founding Fathers of the United States was that we would be a Republic that is “for the people and by the people.” Who are the people? Are they simply the elected officials of our local, state and federal government? Are they just the 1% of the elite of our country? Are they the Comptrollers of Wall Street that control our banking industry? If you are a citizen of the United States of America, then our Founding Fathers had you in mind. Our Constitution is set forth for our Republic to be democracy that is governed “for the people and by the people.” Therefore, it is the responsibility of our elected officials to represent the people for the best interest of the people and thus, they must meet the challenge set before them.
The challenge set before our elected officials is not one to be envied. It is an unenviable responsibility to insure that our Constitution is not shredded by the conduct of a Governor; a Senator; a House of Representative; or the President of the United States, be he or she a Democrat, a Republican, an Independent, or any other party recognized by our Federal Government. It is to insure that our democracy is not dismantled by the “free-will” of a Governor; a Senator; a House of Representative, or the President of the United States, be he or she a Democrat, a Republican, an Independent or any other party recognized by our Federal Government. If our elected officials are keeping in mind that they are “for the people and by the people,” then we must trust the democratic process set before us. In this particular instance, it is the impeachment process. The Constitution of America has set forth perimeters for such a process in order that truth and justice be our mantle and freedom forever our foundation.
So, as the three branches of our government work in concert one with another providing the checks and balances that insure that there is no monarchy, dictatorship, authoritarian or imperial government ruling over the people, let us be responsible in our conduct. Let us watch without wavering. Let us listen without bias. Let us respond without being reactive. If we do not conduct and respond to this process decently and in order, then we will begin the tear away at the fabric of our freedom. Let us not be quick to tear at our Republic and hold to the words of Rev. Dr. Martian Luther King, Jr…..”Let FREEDOM ring!”
