THE INDUSTRY’S BEST KEPT SECRET
By: Stacy King-Chaney/Gospel Editor
There is a hush…. There is a shhhh… that filters through the entertainment industry. It hovers over mainstream music, film, broadcasting, award shows, daytime television, primetime tv and radio. It is the sound of the hardworking men and women of “small” independent works within the world of entertainment. It is the quiet footsteps of those unknown actors and actresses, who are putting one foot in front of the other trying to make strides that “mainstream” will notice. It is the sound of the voice of those small town and local stage productions that hope there will be enough of an echo for Broadway to hear. The men and women, who write, produce, direct and act in their own original works, grind and grind to move forward. They are the Industry’s best kept secret. They are scarcely seen or heard but, the entertainment industry knows the “small” independent artist of the industry exist. So, why the hush. Why the shhh? Why can’t these small time Agencies get ‘big’ time roles for local talent that has no big tie to the industry? Why can’t footprints be made in the concrete floors of Hollywood? Why can’t new faces be on the ‘big’ screen alongside those, who are industry’s “big deal?”
Some say that the entertainment industry is not a “close-knitted” family but a “closed-knitted” family. The doors are unlocked to those, who are already on the inside and outsiders need not knock. Others say that money begets money and small town independent productions have no money to beget, so none will be begotten. Therefore, if you are “small” and independent, your journey will become a “road less traveled.” However, this does not apply to the independent film makers, who have ‘big’ time names backing them, apart from major studios. This applies to those, who “nobody” knows their name. So, how does your name get known? Well, if you are the likes of Peachanda DuBose then you don’t allow your works to be a “kept secret.” You work, while it is day and pray, while it is night. You do not let “no” be your answer because you have already accepted the “yes” to your vision. You write, direct, produce, and publicize the work of your hand. You grind until your labor bares fruit. You seek, until you find. You ask, until you get an answer. You knock, until the door is opened. This “Power-House” of Independent works has made long strides and left deep footprints. She has a voice that can be heard throughout the entertainment industry and the works of her hands has been profitable. She is pushing forwarded and leaving no Talent behind. Any Talent willing to grind has found a place with Peachanda.
