Our world healers are not what you are used to!
“I am intentionally changing the narrative in the Black community around mental health by being extremely vocal about my own instability and the very common factors that led me here. Additionally, I create safe spaces for these conversations to be had online and in real life.” -Melony Hill
“I’m Stronger Than My Struggles and YOU are too!”
Stronger Than My Struggles founded by 8X Author, transformational speaker and 13-year entrepreneur, Melony Hill to inspire and uplift survivors from all walks of life. “At Stronger Than My Struggles, we pride ourselves on helping survivors from all walks of life heal through the written and spoken word to. We want to see everyone create the life they desire and deserve and assist using methods such as non traditional therapy, live events and workshops, financial donations and support. After going to therapy 1-3 days a week for over 7 years, I walked into My therapist office one day and was told that because they no longer took my Insurance, I couldn’t be seen. I was devastated and realized that people who got paid to listen to me might not care as much as they said they did. I realized right then and there, that there needed to be safe spaces that people could go, whether they had money or not, and know someone actually was listening. I also realized we couldn’t put all that on one person, if they disappeared we’d be back at square one. Through Stronger Than My Struggles, we have created a platform of survivors who can also uplift each other.”
Melony Hill is the definition of woman in control of her life and career. Constantly counted out by society due to emotional instabilities and a traumatic upbringing stemming domestic violence, sexual assault and more, Melony has reclaimed her life and inspires others to do the same.
Melony always thought she was different, little did she know how right she was. In 2010, Melony was diagnosed with a slew of emotional illnesses such as depression, anxiety disorder, PTSD, and dissociative identity disorder. To add to her daily struggles, Melony also was diagnosed with chronic pain from Fibromyalgia.
Never one to let an obstacle deter her from her goals, Melony has thrived, despite her mental, physical and emotional limitations. Over the last two years, Melony has self-published 8 books, written for multiple publications online and in print and launched a successful organization to connect other survivors like herself.
Life with multiple personalities keeps Melony active in multiple areas of life and business. The 8x author is also a Life Transition Coach, a journalist, public speaker, and in her spare time, can be found living life as a Goddess.
Her organization, Stronger Than My Struggles, aims to heal through the written and spoken word, offering resources, support and services to survivors from all walks of life. Being declared legally emotionally disabled hasn’t stopped Melony from thriving, pursuing her passions or career goals. She hosts a series of workshops in the Baltimore area including a free weekly therapeutic writing workshop, Writing for My Sanity, which she named after her book of poetry.
Taking her mission to connect others with their purpose seriously, Melony leads the Baltimore branch of the Freelancers Union, a national organization with over 350,000 members nationwide. In September 2018, she was voted National Curriculum Lead for the Freelancers Union nationwide. The favorite part for Melony in all of this, “My favorite part is watching survivors have their breakthroughs so they can have happier lives. My least favorite part is taking the abusive words and behavior when someone with emotional instability is having a bad day. “
Just celebrating her 2 year anniversary for her Stronger Than My Struggles launch (Spring 2017) Melony feels there are 3 things every business owner should know, “I think every business owner should know
* Their ideal customer or client so they can have consistent sales
*How to be flexible, we can plan but must be adaptable, life nor business, always goes according to plan
*Trauma Informed Care practices because there are so many different people, personality and disorders we come across daily. Not everyone can be talked to or treated exactly the same.”
When I asked this Visionary what expertise and or experiences make her successful, she answered, “I am a successful freelance writer and published author, my love for writing has allowed me to utilize this skill to transition into multiple career fields. I even used my passion for writing to create a series of coaching programs and live events that help others heal through the written and spoken word to create the lives they desire and deserve.”
Melony admits there are struggles in running a business, we spoke about the most challenging parts for her. “Battling My own mental instability while helping others navigate through their own would definitely be my hardest challenge in running this business.” Clearly as she lives and breathes her mantra “Stronger Than My Struggles” continues to ring true.
Successful and thriving in business Melony reflects on the 20 year old her and what advice she would offer her, “I’d tell a 20 year old me to live free. What life has taught me is that people will constantly tell you how you should be living, they’ll even try to get you to think that living outside of the approved box will be detrimental to your future. That’s not definite, the only thing that is is that you’re in control of how you play any hand dealt to you. Just live you’ll figure it all out one day.” This mindset naturally creates opportunities and Melony is showing us how daily in her world of magic healing! Even in her magic and consistent achievements….she has goals of more! I asked her if she could have anything in the world, what would it be? “Stability, a husband and house full of kids who actually like Me.”, she stated.
As a healer taking on the energy of the world can be a task many grow weary from. How do you take care of your mental health as you heal others?
“I go to the spa at least once a week, sometimes more. I take time to spend with my significant other and close friends regularly. I set boundaries and enforce them and weekly, I lead a group therapy session.” People always want to know MORE, healing is so many things. Getting a little more personal I asked Melony a couple of questions to help you get to know her better.
What are you inspired by?
I am inspired by people who refuse to live the life they were given and instead create the life they desire and deserve.
What brings your peace?
a mug of hot tea
How do you deal with challenges?
I’ve learned to attempt to ground myself in the moment, I talk to God and I write a lot.
How do you deal with grief?
It’s not something I’ve ever connected to. Maybe because I’m emotionally disabled, but grief and loss don’t affect me much that I know.
Shhhh…it’s a secret!
Writing changed my life at 20 also. At the young age of 20, I created my first coaching program. It was created for the Baltimore City Detention Center Admin Staff. I was praised as the most efficient admin in our system and tasked to create a training program for all other admins to take. My grandmother ended up taking My class a few years later!
Stronger Than My Struggles hosts a free weekly therapeutic writing workshop in Baltimore City. It’s every Tuesday from 6 p.m. at Impact Hub Baltimore. Additionally, we kick off the Crazy Like a Fox Black Mental Health Awareness Tour May 25, 2019 in Atlanta, from there we’ll head to Charlotte, NC on June 9, 2019, Philly on July 14, 2019 and ending in Baltimore on July 27, 2019.
