What Experience or Expertise do you hold that you feel helps you be successful today?
I have an earned Ph.D. in Education, M.S. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, M.S. in Health Education, and B.S. in Sociology. Further, I have a clinical specialization in Grief, Stress, and Trauma. I have provided Clinical Consultation for A&E Docu-series “Intervention”. I am a sought after Clinical Therapist for Celebrity, Executive, and Corporate clients as well as a published author, guest speaker and Mental Health Advocate. In addition, I am a widow of a Naval Veteran and survivor of trauma. My professional experiences coupled with personal challenges that I have overcome contributed to my ability to offer sound, professional care with a personal understanding of the struggle.
What has been the hardest part about running your Business/Brand/Vision?
The most difficult aspect about running a Business/Brand that involves Mental Health is that I have the unique challenge as TV/Media Personality that also holds a Professional License. Therefore, I have to attend to the confidence of sensitive information. I have to often be the guise between Professional Therapist and Public Persona almost daily.
What are 3 things you feel every business owner should know?
Every business owner should know (1) their passion and how it relates to their business , (2) how their skills/talents relate to their desired business , and (3) the correct networking cohorts and how they align with objective of your business.
Why did you start your Business/Brand?
I started my Business/Brand out of a need for credentialed clinicians of color that are sensitive to the unique needs of professional/executive clients. Often times, clients that have to contend with the complex relationship between their professional status and the need for Mental Health Therapy.
What do you do to keep a healthy mental health?
I exercise mental wellness habits by taking a inventory of my life and elements that bring stress or negative energy. I take time off when needed to just reflect. I don’t over extend to please others. I also value my ability to set healthy boundaries and say “no” to invitations that don’t contribute to my journey of healing.
What brings your peace?
Time spent at the beach in reflection.
How do you deal with challenges?
I process the source of the challenge occurs and take gradual steps towards the change needed to solve problem and restore peace.
How do you deal with grief?
I have faced grief often in my life. With each lost it was dealt with and processed differently because of the different kind of hurt or loss. I found that work with a skilled Grief Counselor and taking it “easy” on myself was best. By not rushing the process and allowing the flow of the experience to happen in its divine timing was best.
What is your favorite part and worst part of what you do?
My absolute favorite part of what I do is working with others as they journey through a challenge in life, even with my TV Show it is about bringing darkness to light and moving in progress to healing. The worst part of what I do is that in my Private Practice I am required to submit paperwork to commercial insurance for client’s visit. There are times the insurer has a policy regarding the type of diagnosis and treatment I am allowed to offer. This is one of the areas of medical practice I don’t enjoy.
How you are intentionally changing the narrative?
I am intentionally removing the stigma of Mental Health Challenges by allowing a public forum via TV/Media to highlight and embrace those that speak openly. I am changing the narrative by bringing the light to the experience of Mental Illness and Trauma whereby the subject is viewed less as “secret” and more of a “movement” for change.
Tell us a secret fact about you?
My guilty pleasure is to watch marathon episodes of the “Twilight Zone” every year on New Years Eve.
If you could have anything in the world what would it be?
The absolute freedom to continue doing what I do everyday without worry or financial concerns associated with running a business.
