The other day I caught a snippet of the Wendy Williams show, her guest for the segment was Dee Barnes, rapper and television personality whose name I grew up hearing alot but never her story. Watching the show I didn’t know what I would learn and why I even stopped my scroll to click. Sexual Assault, Harassment, and Domestic Violence victims are now speaking up!
Dee Barnes spoke of being homeless and the fact that she was intentionally stopped from opportunities, gaining positions, gigs, or employment due to her involvement and relationship with rapper Dr. Dre…
What stood out to me were a few things that resonated with me and I know at least one will with you! I have lived and seen many situations myself and experienced the “silent black ball” agenda when those in power don’t get what they demand. Ever had a company say that “I need to talk to _____ before making a decision?” TWO, even after all this time, she is still afraid to and speak on details of her ordeal inclusive of the allegations of sexual assault. Have you faced constructive discharge, termination, and loss of livelihood because you wouldn’t ignore illegal treatment? The mental health triggers that many experienced listening to her story and how it is affected by being unable to provide, fighting for the truth and fairness still hasn’t detoured her from trying to rebuild. You could see the pain in her eyes and people will still speculate while KNOWING from our own Experiences that this does indeed happen.
Someone right now may be dealing with assault, sexual harassment, domestic violence and you wouldn’t know it. Speaking up changes the narrative and you don’t have to speak up to the world, just to and for yourself!
