The grand moment has arrived every year the founder of Soar Women’s Empowerment Summit, Tam Lawrence prepares to make a positive impact in the world. For 2017 the theme will be the”Bee the Change” for Soar Women Empowerment Summit being held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin at the Holiday Inn Riverfront hotel. The summit was developed to inspire, empower and motivate women around the globe.
How exciting this year’s presenting sponsor is Northwestern Mutual. As a leading brand Northwestern Mutual has shown and continues to demonstrate, its efforts to create a positive change in our communities at large.
Around 80 percent of the women arrested have children, and most are poor and Latina, or African-American, The New York Times reports
While men still far outnumber women in jails and prisons across the country, women have had a far higher rate of growth in local jails than men, a new study by the Vera Institute of Justice and the Safety and Justice Challenge found. Women now end up in jail cells at a rate of 14 times what it was in the 1970s; about 110,000 women were awaiting trial or sentencing in 2014, compared to fewer than 8,000 in 1970.
“Once a rarity, women are now held in jails in nearly every county,” stated Lawrence.
While there are still fewer women in US jails than there are men, they are disproportionately affected by
some of the main problems plaguing the criminal justice system: harsh punishments for those addicted to substance abuse, warehousing the mentally ill in jails as opposed to treating them, disadvantaging the poor who cannot afford bail or various fees.
“Although, women face vast number of challenges there are women who are no longer pigeon-held into certain professions, no longer are they simply expected to do gender-specific jobs. Female professionals are taking control of their careers in a way that works best for them, including when and how they start their own businesses,” stated Lawrence.
According to American Express 2016 State of Women-Owned business report found that 11.3 million of the United State of America businesses are currently owned by women, and an average of 1,072 new female-owned companies are opening everyday. The number of women owned business is 5 times higher that the national average for all businesses, which means more women are leaping into entrepreneurship.
“Our children will suffer if adults continue to resist our opportunity to create change. My parents taught me when you see a problem, you solve it,” stated Lawrence.
More than one in eight women, more than 16.9 million, lived in poverty last year. Poverty rates were particularly high for families headed by single mothers — 1 in 3 (36.5 percent) lived in poverty. More than half of all poor children (56.2 percent) lived in female-headed families in 2015.
