Exposure Magazine Contributing Writer- Art Director/Aspire TV Tim Nunez
I work with After Effects on a daily basis, and being employed at a network I have to adhere to our brand guidelines. What I mean is, when I am animating end pages for our editors, every page must look and feel the same.
Working in creative services is a high paced demanding job, and you may be assigned many different projects in a day. As designer you find ways to speed up your workflow, for me part of my workflow to ensure my graphical elements are animating the same way, I like to use a script that manipulates keyframes the same way every time. This really saves me a bunch of time when I am in my lab creating graphics.
I’d like to hear from you as well and what you like to use.
Don’t Under-sell Yourself!
I was talking to a photographer that we use quite often for gallery shoots, and we were discussing the importance of pricing yourself appropriately. This holds true for any type of creative professional, or freelancer of any kind. Do research and see what the going rates are for what you’re offering, and be competitive in your pricing. Keep in mind what it cost to learn the skills you have acquired over the years. Oh, and not to mention the cost of equipment you have invested in. Just yesterday I was on a shoot with very expensive cameras and lenses that cost as much as cars! Know our worth, know that the creative community is relatively small, and most people know each other. With that being said, if you’re charging $100 for a job that should cost $400, you’re really doing a disservice to yourself and the rest of the people out there that are trying to make a living. I will talk about this more in upcoming posts. Please check me out on instagram, Facebook and twitter , click on the links! I would really like to hear from you. I will be giving away a t-shirt to the first person that likes, and follows me on any of my social platforms with the hashtag #aspiretim
Tips for Freelancing in TV
So, you decided you like having the freedom of working when and where you want to, and for some thats great, but there are a few things I have found over the years that you must do! As many of you may or may not know, once you get your foot in the door somewhere and do great work consistently, you will always be busy working as a freelancer. Not all situations are the same, this is just my observation. Here are a few tips that will hopefully help you out.
The biggest thing for me is being punctual. You can be the greatest motion designer or editor I have ever seen, but if you can’t get to work when I ask you, well then I don’t want you there. Its pretty obvious that this holds true to a lot of employers. In my experience I have seen it too many times, people come and go as they please sometimes without saying a word! I find that very disrespectful. If I hire you for a job, and specify times, well thats what I expect. You can forget about future projects if you’re consistently late.
As artists we tend to take a lot of things personally when it comes to our work. That won’t fly in a fast paced environment where producers or Art Directors give you direction and expect you to follow directions. You have to be able to take criticism for your work, without getting worked up! its a fine line for sure, and it was something I struggled with from time to time, but I learned that if you can deliver what is being asked for, you’re going to be treated like a rockstar. in a good way. Listen to what is being asked for, expect revisions, keep cool and deliver great work.
These are just a few tips that may help you out if you’re just getting into the business. I will touch on this topic again in the future. Next week I may talk about some scripts for After effects I like to use as well as some plugins that I think are a must have. Have a Great 4th of July, and please be sure to check me out on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter @aspiretim. I would also like to see what you’re working on, so please tag me!
