Over the years I have learned a lot from many different people. I have learned a lot about doing business and also that you really don’t need to take on EVERY client that enters your door. Sure, you may want to do that if you’re starting out fresh in a business and you have bills and perhaps employees to pay. I am talking about that person who has been in the game for a while, is making a good steady income and can now start to pick and choose who they burn their life energy with.
Most clients are great to work with and know exactly what they want and know that the reason they are coming to you is that you’re a pro, and they trust that you can achieve their goals without a lot of back and forth nonsense. Then there are the few that are in way over their heads and have no clues and ideas about what they want, and that doesn’t necessarily make them a bad client, they just need your expert guidance. This is where your creativity can flow at its highest. Great right? Well, let’s not forget the people who are all of that I just talked about, but have egos that are so big that they just can’t let go of anything and they are the know all and be all of everything on earth. These are the ones that want to low ball you on every project as well. These are the clients that you must watch out for. They don’t care about you, they just want to make themselves shine. I get it, but hey if you find yourself working for a client that makes you upset every time you work with them or a client that doesn’t value your time or expects unlimited revisions (be upfront about how many revisions are allowed) are the types of clients you should just run away from as fast as you can. You will feel so much better for it. Trust me when I say that a better client will take their place in no time. If you absolutely need this client to make ends meet then add an aggravation fee! lol. Bottom line, make a great product, be honest and straightforward with your clients, don’t burn yourself out and most importantly you MUST make time for your family, your friends and especially yourself.
