Exposure Alert: WalMart will be Delivering Groceries
Stay Home! Wal-Mart is Now Delivering Groceries to Your Door.
Walmart is expanding its grocery delivery service across the US this year, the company announced Wednesday.
The service, which offers same-day delivery in as little as three hours, will be expanded from six metro areas to more than 100, ultimately reaching more than 40% of US households by the end of the year.
Walmart will charge a flat fee of $9.95 for delivery and require a minimum order of $30 to access the service.
The retailer plans to use its own personal shoppers to pick and pack delivery orders in more than 800 stores. It will partner with Uber and other crowdsourced delivery companies to transport the groceries to customers’ doorsteps.
“We’re moving fast to save our customers time,” Tom Ward, vice president of digital operations for Walmart, said on a call with reporters on Tuesday.
He said Walmart will be “aggressive” with the rollout and plans to eventually make the service available to all of its US shoppers.
Walmart is going all-in on grocery delivery one month after Amazonannounced it would start offering members of its Prime service free two-hour delivery from Whole Foods, which Amazon acquired last year in a $13.7 billion deal.
Target and Kroger have also been expanding their grocery delivery services. Target announced earlier this year that it plans to offer same-day delivery of groceries from half of its 1,800 stores using Shipt, a delivery startup it recently acquired.
Ward declined to directly address rival delivery services. But he made a veiled reference to Instacart, which sometimes charges customers higher prices on goods than the retailers that sell them.
“Unlike other services, customers will find the same everyday low prices” on groceries through Walmart’s website and app, he said.
A Few Tasty Ways to Get Creative with Holiday Leftovers
The Christmas festivities are over and some of you have cooked for an army because it brings joy to smell the aroma of food to share later with family and friends. Despite take-away-plates, the leftovers have camped out in the kitchen. The refrigerator space has been cleared and as the previous holiday’s—locating space in the fridge and freezer becomes a major chore. Before the leftover dilemma, the complex dance of musical chairs was meticulously choreographed.
The theme of the musical chairs takes on an entirely new role—instead of people, enter the pots and pans; and instead of chairs, the lineup consists of the stovetop, oven, slow cooker, and roaster. Moving along toward—the pinned recipes filling the counter top whittled down to a select few to prepare family traditions and favorites, and if all goes smoothly on the most challenging recipes—there could be a signature cocktail in the works or champagne toast in the works.
The various dishes adorning the table and greeting guests took center stage during the Christmas holiday gathering. The day after, let’s set the scene—you walk into the kitchen on December 26th to view a swollen refrigerator overflowing with food in competition with the freezer which is filled to the capacity. This is not your first rodeo in the name of “Leftovers” and will likely reoccur on upcoming holidays or festive occasions. Ideally, if you’re reading this article—well, you know—food, family, and friends, force you to become creative and perhaps pack on a few pounds leading up to your annual “losing weight” New Years resolution.
As is often the case, any major cooking endeavor presents that inevitable day-after challenge: The host(s) want to make sure there’s enough for everyone, but that usually means leftovers. What to do with all that good food?
Don’t let the leftovers challenge you and by all means—do not to fear the excess. Whether you have extra turkey, ham, mashed potatoes, veggies, sides, stuffing, etc., the following roundup of recipes may just have you planning and hoping for leftovers.
One Roasted Chicken, Three Different Meals. All these ideas work with leftover roasted turkey, and frankly, we’d roast a slightly larger turkey just to have more of those BLT sandwiches.
Creative Ways to Use Leftover Pumpkin Puree. Sommer covers the whole gamut: sweet, savory, even drinks!
Brown Rice Power Bowl. Got leftover turkey? Leftover roasted veggies? Extra salad ingredients? Make yourself a nice, healthy power bowl! Bonus points if you whip up a dressing with some leftover cranberry sauce. And healthy means you can feel good about having that slice of leftover pie.
Mashed Potato and Wild Rice Stuffed Mushrooms. We’d make extra mashed potatoes just to have a reason to serve these.
Pinwheel Sandwiches for Lunch Boxes. Put those leftovers to good use in school and work lunches after the long holiday. Dara has some great ideas here to get you started.
Leftovers never had it so good! Add your creativity to leftovers, and know that you’re capable of giving your leftovers new life. Despite the extra time in reinventing the turkey or stuffing, your taste-buds are worth every minute. Think about the end-result, which just means you’ll have the makings of a few additional meals after the holiday!
