Exposure Magazine: How did you get into the music industry?
Laval W. Belle: I started playing drums at age 11 at my Godfather’s church in St. Louis.
I moved to Miami, FL at age 26 and began working in supper clubs and theaters.
After 3 years of that, I moved to Los Angeles and was hired to play drums for the late-great
diva, Vesta Williams, who later gave me an opportunity to become her musical director. The rest is history.
Exposure Magazine: Who have you had the pleasure to work with?
Laval W. Belle: Earth, Wind and Fire, Bette Midler, Barry White, Chaka Kahn, Aretha Franklin, Engelbert Humperdink, Kirk Franklin, George Benson, Keb’Mo and Andre Crouch…to name a few.
Exposure Magazine: How did you turn your gift into your career?
Laval W. Belle: I simply maximize my gift of drumming and the opportunities that playing music presented to me. I take advantage of all of my creative opportunities.
Exposure Magazine: What advice would you give to someone who wants to get into the music industry?
Laval W. Belle: Make sure that you don’t confuse the music business with the art of music. Be true to yourself and allow your convictions and passions to navigate your decisions. By all means be flexible and have a willingness to try different things.
Exposure Magazine: How important is faith and God when perusing your purpose?
Laval W. Belle: God is the Creator of my gift and the Author of my appointment in this life. So God is always a priority in pursuing my purpose.
Exposure Magazine: Congratulations on your book Your Gifts Are Not Your Purpose Workbook, tell me about it?
Laval W. Belle: Your Gifts Are Not Your Purpose Workbook is really volume 2 of the first Gift book I penned nearly 20 years ago. I was divinely inspired to write the words “Your Gifts Are Not Your Purpose” while playing drums with the great vocalist Phillip Bailey, of Earth, Wind and Fire. After writing the title down, my life flashed before me. I believe there’s a distinct difference between our gifts which are created for us, and our purpose which is why we are created. The book will absolutely assist the reader in identifying their gifts/talents and purpose. Your Gifts Are Not Your Purpose Workbook will change your life.
Exposure Magazine: What’s next for you?
Laval W. Belle: I will continue promoting Your Gifts Are Not Your Purpose while expanding my new publishing company, Noah’s Ark Publishing Service. In 2018 we will publish our first children’s book, written by children. I’m also excited about advancing the entrepreneurial spirit of our youth.
